    Every bolted joint aboard a vessel carries a weight far beyond its physical mass. Fasteners anchor propulsion systems, secure deck fittings, and connect hull sections — and their selection is governed by one of the most consequential regulatory frameworks in global shipping: ship classification society rules.
    Ship classification societies verify that vessels meet safety, structural integrity, and environmental standards throughout their operational life. Three societies dominate the global fleet by tonnage: ABS (American Bureau of Shipping), DNV, and Lloyd's Register (LR) .
